Module 1: Valuing Each Child and FamilyValuing Diversity |

|
The United States is a nation of many people who come from many cultures, backgrounds and experiences. Classrooms and child care centers are no different. The school-age children in your care do not always come to your program as blank slates. In fact, they are constantly absorbing information about different people, cultures and differences in every setting they are in. Some studies have even shown that infants begin noticing racial differences in people that they interact with. When a child grows older, they begin observing and being aware of their parent's reactions to certain groups of people and at some point they may even begin to mimic their actions or repeat their opinions.
It is always important to do what we can, as child care professionals, to value diversity in our programs and lead by example.
There are many types of learning materials that can help children to become more aware of other people and celebrate their own heritage. When you are setting up your classroom, think of it as the “home away from home” for your children and families. Ask yourself, “How can I make this a warm and welcoming place for myself and for our families?”
