In my program, each class has walkie talkies, so if there were an instance where I needed to help a student to the restroom or health room, I would use the walkie talkie to get assistance from another staff member.

When it comes down to working alone and having to change diapers. I think their should be another person in the building, because what if one of the kids fall and hurt themselves. Someone needs to be watching them at all time.

If I could see another worker while still supervising the other children, I would call them over to either take over or take the sick child to call their parents to come pick them up. Or if need be, take the whole group to find another worker to help deal with the situation.

If there is ever a staff alone with 15 students another staff would be close by, we always keep a walkie talkie on us or a site phone to contact someone in case of an emergency. In this case I would let the staff know in the front to take care of the sick child. Otherwise I would call the front office to see if she can take the student to the nurses office.

My program is an elementary school, so there is a head teacher and TA in each classroom. The other two classrooms are well under ratio (two teachers to ten and eleven students) so if I had to take a sick student out of the room I would call for the TA from another classroom to come relieve me momentarily. If they were unavailable for whatever reason, I would call the main office and have an available employee come immediately.

We Always have 2 other staff members besides myself but if for some reason they were in the kitchen, bathroom etc...I would blow my whistle 3X . That means we have an emergency. When the whistle is blown 3x the kids go to the nearest adult and line up. in this case they would come to me and the staff would hear the whistle and also join. I would explain what was going on and have the kids sit until the other person showed up. we have a few emergency plans but this seems to work for our group. i would then walk the child to the nurses office and contact parent or guardian .

If they need to go to nurse, you can call the nurse and ask they come pick-up the child from you. If needing to go to restroom - take all 15 with you! Big bathroom trip! Luckily our program is required to have 2 staff at all times no matter the number which avoids this conflict.

If a child needs a staff members assistance and needs to leave the room, i would communicate with the other staff member and then speak with the other staff members and let them know that i need to leave the room and if i could receive a sub for the moment so we are not out of ratio in the classroom. Typically we have at least two staff per group of 15+ children but in the event there was only one we could communicate with the walkie talkies our program provides for us. Our program uses walkie talkies for just this reason. I would move over to attend to the child, so that they know they are safe, but I would also call on my walkie talkie for assistance from another adult as soon as possible. Then either myself or my coworker can attend to the sick child. Often we move the child toward the door where we know the other adult is coming from; if we can see the adult in the hallway and the child is well enough to move, we can send them toward the other adult watching both them and the other children in the room until the child connects with the approaching staff member, communicating via walkie talkie throughout. In the interem, I would also clean up the child as best as possible and begin the sanitation process of necessary areas.

Worst case scenario we take a 'field trip' and we all walk over, best thing to do is call in reinforcements be it another teacher, a supervisor, a parent or a sub.

I would use the phone or intercom to contact someone nearby. If they were unable to respond promptly I would see about a teacher in a adjacent classroom - that way I could remain just outside of the classroom while checking. If the sickness were serious enough, requiring prompt attention, I would administer that attention and maybe have the class line up quietly outside the restroom or nurse's office, in order to supervise both at once or easily go back and forth. Yell for help, too.

If another staff is available, I would have them come take over for me or have them take the child. If another staff is not available, I would take all the children to the gym and let the sick child walk to the bathroom or to the nurse's office (both are in my site from the gym).

We have a teacher in each class and an assistant who share her time between our two classes. So if the assistant is not in my classroom, I will call the other teacher in order she send me the assistant.
And then, I will ask the assistant to go and take care of the child who is sick.

In the Head Start I volunteer there is always at least 2 if not 3 staff present in the classroom and usually one in the office on site. The same is also shared - divided by a wall - with another Head Start so there is always someone around to call on. There is a phone in the office to call to the main school office, on the outside chance no one else is around

The only time the teachers would be in separate areas is if one teacher took a group of children outside.
