Module 8: Interactions and GuidanceMoral Development |
Page 16 |
Moral development is the process of acquiring the standards of behavior considered acceptable by a society. Morality involves understanding and using accepted rules of conduct when interacting with others. Standards of behavior become internalized.
Children learn moral behavior by interacting with others. Preschoolers begin to learn acceptable behavior through the use of rewards and consequences.
Some behaviors bring rewards, such as praise or positive attention. They learn to repeat these behaviors. Other behaviors bring consequences. They have not yet internalized any standards of behavior, but they learn how to avoid consequences.
Children in the school-age years are more aware of the world around them and more sensitive to the feelings of others. As they become more concerned about others’ needs, they want to help them. This desire influences their moral development. They begin to internalize rules of conduct.
