Television, computers and videos
School age children have a great deal of exposure to many different media sources including television, computers, cell phones and computer tablets. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children spend an average of seven hours each day using those entertainment media outlets. Studies have shown that too much exposure to this media use can lead to attention problems, school difficulties, sleep disorders, eating disorders, obesity and other problems. This increased exposure also gives children a platform for illicit and risky behaviors.
It is important to limit screen time and offer diverse educational formats for electronic and non-electronic sources such as books, board games and other materials. It is also important to lead by example when it comes to the use and frequency of use of these electronic materials.
The recommended amount of screen time for children and teens should not exceed more than one or two hours per day and this recommended maximum time should consist of high-quality content. It is very important for kids to spend time on outdoor play, reading, hobbies, socializing and using their imaginations during free play.
