What was your favorite school lunch? Would it meet the current nutritional guidelines.

My favorite school lunch was nachos. They were the nachos with the salty tortilla chips, liquid cheese, and questionable ground beef. There is no way this would meet the current nutritional guidelines as there are absolutely no vegetables or fruits. Looking back, I can't believe this was served at lunch.

My favorite school lunch was sloppy joes. I don't remember what it was served with, but I think it would have been french fries or something like that. If the sloppy joes were served with a vegetable and were on a whole wheat bun, it might meet the nutritional guidelines.

I always packed my own lunches, so I went with food that was quick and easy rather than nutritional. I liked peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with fruit snacks or an apple and some sort of juice. This meal definitely didn't meat the nutritional guidelines, except that it included bread and a fruit.

Many of the fruits and vegetables were canned and the fresh ones were not really fresh. This definitely did not meet the requirements.

In middle school it was pizza and I'd always get a salad with it, carrots and ranch, and grapes or an apple since I'm pretty picky with fruit. I also knew the lunch lady so she would be nice and let me get a fruit if there was one out I didn't like.

I was homeschooled, so my mom was the one who made us lunch. She always did a good job of providing nutritious meals and snacks, and encouraged us to eat healthy once we were old enough to make our own snacks. My favorite was usually chicken nuggets served with honey or barbecue sauce, and she always made sure we had a couple carrot sticks to go with it at the very least.

This is a tough question because I can only remember eating school provided lunch in elementary. In jr high, I brought my lunch and high school had an open campus so I bought lunch in town.
I remember there being a recurring mashed potatoes and gravy lunch in elementary. I think that was my favorite. I don't recall there being any meet or meet substitute. There was some kind of vegetable though and milk. So I don't think it would meet the standards for WA.

My favorite school lunch was cheese zombie day! These included cheese, bread and tomato soup. In elementary school, we had to leave the cafeteria with two sides (usually some type of veggie or fruit) and a milk carton on our tray. We were sometimes allowed a treat (like a fruit juice Popsicle). I think that by requiring the children to put other items on their tray, it would help meet the standards. I'm sure now when they serve this item it has less fat content and healthier ingredients than when I went to school.

My favorite school lunch was pizza! Sure it could have been altered to make it fit the requirements but other kids rarely ate the other healthy options because they were boring and lacked flavor. In order to make sure students are eating within the necessary requirements make healthy food that tastes great such as pizza packed with yummy roasted vegetables and leaner meats. You could also make a fruit salad for something a little sweet on the side.

I'm also vegan so according to these guidelines I'm not getting enough animal based products like cow's milk or dairy products. I think good foods for children are ones that they will enjoy eating like grapes, pomegranate seeds, carrot sticks with hummus, fat-free tortilla chips with salsa, etc. Children love little pieces and enjoy dipping.

My school lunches were around 50 yrs ago!! I would say I liked the Hamburgers and fries. There was probably some kind of canned veggie. The burgers may be ok. but the buns were processed white bread, The fries were heavy in salt and probably frozen ones that were heavily processed with bleach. I would not say today's nutritional standards were met. However, we were given milk and there were no vending machines or sodas, etc in the schools

I've always been super into healthy foods and tasty flavors, so I rarely enjoyed the unhealthy, over-processed 'food' that is served in American schools. In high school, there was a taco salad option that had many vegetables and other toppings to choose from and I remember liking that more than anything else. I believe that most food served in schools is sub-standard nutritionally, even if it technically fits the requirements listed in this module.

My parents never let me have school lunch, and always prepared my lunch, or had me pack my own lunch when I got older. Usually my lunch consisted of some sort of sandwich (turkey, tuna, egg salad) on whole grain bread, fruit (apples, grapes, melon, orange slices) a veggie like carrots, celery, lettuce on my sandwich, a yogurt or cheese stick, and something like chips, or a fruit snack... I think my packed lunches met the standards, but on the rare occasion I bought lunch and had pizza and brownies or something, the requirements were not met.

I didn't eat the school lunches growing up. We usually brought our own food--the local schools were notorious for their poor food quality and type of food provided.
Anyway, I really liked soups as a kid, especially homemade chicken soup. It was usually eaten with a (whole wheat) roll and an apple/orange/pear/grapes.
