A professional is a person who uses specialized skills and knowledge to perform specific tasks and duties related to their field of expertise. As a childcare professional, you are someone who is guiding the growth and learning of children during before or after-school hours. This is a very important profession where you will be working with and guiding children during a period of their development which sparks curiosity, learning and exploration.
You will help them learn new skills, adapt to new social situations, solve problems and become resourceful and responsible individuals. The care and guidance that you provide will have a lasting impact on their sense of self, their confidence and their motivation levels. They are then more likely to make good decisions and succeed in life through various pursuits. |
Professionalism is applying the knowledge and experience that you have in caring for school-age children to support a diverse program of activities and opportunities for learning. Professionals take advantage of any opportunity to learn more about their field and to enhance their existing skills. They are almost always assessing their work and interactions with children and are open minded to new ideas, suggestions and perspectives.
As a professional in a school-age program your role includes supporting families. When parents trust you with the care of their child, they have confidence in your abilities and in the high-quality care that you and your colleagues provide. This helps them feel better as parents and as professionals themselves.
